Details

The Czech Republic smoking tobacco market is showing a decline in the recent years partly due to the increase of taxes. From all categories, FCT alternatives have suffered a push in sales. Evidence since 2009 suggests that these increases are also pushing cigarette smokers towards contraband. However, this is considered a short-term issue for rolling tobacco and along with tax increases in neighbouring markets such as Poland, the Czech smoking tobacco market can be expected to expand further over the coming decade.

Key Findings
- The smoking tobacco market in the Czech Republic is relatively small although it has benefited from significant expansion in recent years with volumes up around 90% in 2011, down to about 8% in 2013 and a further drop of 9% in 2014. Smoking tobacco accounts for more than 10% of the overall tobacco products market with per capita consumption of approximately 200g. in 2014.

- Manufactured cigarettes dominate the tobacco products market accounting for the majority of the total tobacco products market in tonnage terms in 2014. Smoking tobacco is the second largest sector with approximately 2,000 tonnes what represents a remarkable increase comparing with 2010.

- Retail prices have increased significantly recently in large part because of the hikes in excise duty. Currently an 18g pack of the most popular brand retails at CzK 54 per pack.

- The Czech FCT market is led by Imperial Tobacco, which is credited with a almost half of market volume in 2014. PMI ranks second in the market followed by BAT.
