The Polish smoking tobacco market has recently been transformed from being a small pipe tobacco-dominated market, attracting little interest and accounting for only less than 0.5% of the tobacco products market in 1990, to a major sector in its own right. FCT and, for a limited period, pipe brands have been the driving force behind this transformation, rising to account for more than 5% of the tobacco products market in 2011. However, price rises in 2012 resulted in a major contraction of volumes to almost 2,300 tons, another 5% downturn in 2013, followed by a further 3% approximately in 2014 to 2015.

Key Findings
- The market for factory made cigarettes is in general decline with volumes down by 58.4% on 1990 levels. Nevertheless, they still retained more than 95% share of the overall tobacco market in 2014

- Consumption of FCT, and pipe tobacco sold for hand rolling, has expanded considerably since the 1990s, and smoking tobacco accounted for almost 5% of tobacco market volumes in 2014

- Price pressure is resulting in a shift in interest towards smaller packs, notably those less than 50g. These accounted for 38% of sales as of January 2015, significantly lower than the previous year.

- Imports have been rising and, after a downturn in 2005, increased to approximately 8,000 tons in 2012, before falling to 5,000 tons in 2014.
